This lesson defines what qualifies as a hazardous chemical under OSHA’s classification of physical and health effects, and explains where hazardous chemicals are commonly found across healthcare, dental, home-care, and courier settings. The lesson explains a medical courier’s right to know which chemicals are present and where they are located, and the right to receive that information in a clear and understandable format.

Labels and Safety Data Sheets

This lesson explains the Globally Harmonized System that standardizes chemical labeling and covers the required label elements, including product identifiers, signal words, pictograms, hazard statements, and precautionary statements. The lesson addresses labeling requirements for secondary containers and workplace-specific labeling systems, the immediate-use exception, and the steps to take when a label is missing or damaged. Covers the purpose and organization of Safety Data Sheets, including the standardized 16-section format, and explains how to locate specific information within a Safety Data Sheet for hazard identification, personal protective equipment selection, spill response, first aid, and disposal.
